The genitals of plants have evolved to appeal, not to their own conspecifics, but rather to the bees and other insects with whom they depend on symbiosis to reproduce.

That they should appeal so to humans is a side effect, albeit frequently a pleasant one.

  1. …unless it’s not. We do, after all, go to a great deal of effort to propagate many species of plants for no reason other than that we find their genitals appealing.
